District center, town of Berehovo is located on the plain, but from the north and from the south-east it is surrounded by highlands of volcanic origin covered with vineyards. It borders on Hungary (there are customs crossing points Kosyno, Luzhanka, Dzvinkove ).

As the legend says, a herdsman called Sus was feeding a herd when his ox dug a hole with the help of its hooves and there was a bucket of gold. At the expense of this money construction of a town at the bank of the river began and it was called Beregsus. The first archaeological evidence belong to the late Palaeolithic  Age. In 1241 hordes of Mongolian Tatars destroyed the settlement. Over the years the town became an administrative center of Berezkyi komitat.

General information

Lowlands occupy the major part of the territory and the highest peak of Berehove district is of 250 m high. The Borzhava river and numerous channels play a substantial role in a relief formation. Almost beneath the whole territory of Berehove district there is a thermal sea which temperature constitutes 18 – 80 °C above zero and it is not so deep, just about 800 m. It is used by people in the town of Berehove and village of Kosyno for treatment and prophylactic measures.

Not long ago a big marsh Chornyi Mochar was located in the territory of Berehove district. One of its remainders forms now the Didovske lake and local people know many legends about it. As old-a-ged inhabitants state there is a big black dragon in the lake with a long neck and thick body. A lot of people often disappear whine having a night bathe and thereafter they are never found. They say, it is the black dragon work.

Almost all European architectural styles are introduced at Berehove district: from late Byzantium, Romanic, Gothic, a bit of Renaissance, Baroque, Classic, Romantic till the styles of the end of the XIX – beginning of the XX century: secession, eclecticism, functionalism, constructivism.

At the medieval age when the Gothic and the Baroque were dominant heavy stone solid churches symbolizing power of religion appeared here. Their typical features include vertical compositions, architectural combination of religiousness with love of live, much shorter cross nave, ogival windows, quite a complicated skeleton of supporting system. Ancient temples are located in Kid´osh, Berehove, Bene, Chetfalva, Heten, etc.

There are the medieval castles in the village of Kvasovo and the village of Vary and the palace of Bethlen’s family is located in the town of Berehove.
