Irshava district is located in a picturesque pre-mountain valley. Territory of the district is inhabited since old times. Exactly here the treasures of early iron age (10-9 centuries B.C.) were found. Irshava was first mentioned in 1341 when it was under the rule of Hungarian feudal lords. Irshava district was formed in 1947. The name of Irshava derives from an old Slavonic word “irzhava” (rusty) because in those times Irshavka or Irzhavka river carried a plenty of iron in its waters and had a corresponding rusty colour. Its old name “Iloshva” comes from the last name of lords of this territory.

Vast majority of the territory of the district is occupied by mountains and the highest point of Irshava district is Couchera – Rossushka mountain, its height is 1977 meters. The Borzhava river and the Irzhavka river play a significant role in the relief formation.
More then 2000 species of plants grow on the territory of Irshava district. The tourists have an opportunity to see unique wooden churches in the villages of Lockit, Deshcovitsia, Orthodox convent in the village Preborzhavske and Greek Catholic convent in the village of Imstychovo. You can make an interesting journey on the board of exotic train with a steam locomotive.

In the suburbs of the town in the hole of Buduliv you can see the remains of an ancient Slavonic settlement. Remarkably, medieval castle of Bronetsk is situated in the territory of the district, a lot of legends and narrations were written about it. The palace of a noble family of Dovghaii is situated in the village of Dovghe (now it serves as a tuberculosis dispensary).

Irshava district is rich in interesting and picturesque places for visiting. They are holes of Stavlysh, Kamianka, Bagno, mountain valley Cook. The most outstanding among them is Zacharovana Dolyna (Charmed Valley) which is one of the best reservations of wild life of the district. In the mountain village of Lysychovo there is the only in Ukraine working museum-smithy “Gamora” founded more then 300 years ago.  

The geographical territory of the Borzhava river valley consists of three administrative districts: Irshava district, Beregiv district, Vinogradiv district. In 1904-1907 a railway was built here and it was a significant technical project of the region development. Timber industry under the rule of Austro-Hungarian monarchy and the under the rule of Czechoslovakia Republic has been developing using advanced technologies of those times, namely the construction of transport railways all over the territory of Zakarpattia. In the times of the USSR with state-planned economy the railway was used for wood and construction materials transportation as well as for passenger transportation.
